About Mark Filsinger

Mark Filsinger is a versatile trumpet performer, composer, arranger, and clinician. Based in Buffalo, NY, Filsinger has performed and toured around the United States with various jazz, classical, and commercial ensembles including Bright Eyes, The Who, Weird Al Yankovic, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Johnny Mathis, the Beach Boys, and The Temptations.  

As Artistic Director of the Buffalo Jazz Collective, Filsinger regularly organizes, composes, and performs for various jazz concerts and events in Western New York. Those concerts have featured special guest artists such as Don Menza, Brad Leali, Steve Davis, Pat Labarbera, James Burton III, Kirk MacDonald, Freddie Hendrix, and Joe Ford. In addition, Filsinger has performed as a leader and sideman in groups on the Rochester International Jazz Festival, Historic Lewiston Jazz Festival, Queen City Jazz Festival, Olcott Jazz Trail, and Fredonia Jazz Festival.

In 2022, The Mark Filsinger Chamber Big Band released its debut album, Groovin’ High on Buffalo Jazz Collective Records. The album features nine of Filsinger’s original arrangements and compositions that highlight weaving bebop lines, intricate counterpoint, powerful shout choruses, and plenty of space for improvisation. The album features guest soloist, Bobby Militello, who performed, toured, and recorded for more than 30 years as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. In May 2022, the album peaked at #22 on the North American College and Community Radio (NACC) Jazz Chart.

Mark Filsinger received a Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music in 2012. He has served as a guest artist and presented workshops on jazz education around the United States and Europe for premier organizations such as the Jazz Education Network, International Society for Music Education, and the National Association for Music Education. Filsinger serves as Associate Professor of Music at SUNY Buffalo State and has previously been a faculty member at Temple University, The University of the Arts, The University of Pennsylvania, and the Eastman Community Music School.
